Oonagh Atkinson
I qualified as a counsellor in 2008 and I currently work with individuals, couples, older adults, and young people. I work from a client centred perspective and have recently qualified with Level 5 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I like to draw on approaches which are best suited to the individual. My aim is to support the client whilst working towards greater personal understanding. I believe the relationship developed is key to successful exploration and change.
I have experience working with many issues including: generalised anxiety, depression, bereavement and loss, relationship issues, workplace related issues, family issues, low confidence/self-esteem, image issues, bullying, abuse (emotional, sexual and physical), pregnancy related issues (miscarriage, loss late in pregnancy), post natal depression, living with terminal illness and emotional eating issues.
I am committed to my own personal and professional development, and have recently completed a Level 5 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as well as gaining my Certificate in Supervision from York St John University.
I also work with young people age 13+ who have issues with low self-esteem, struggle to feel they 'fit in' to their surroundings and/or who are having difficulty at home - I have found that offering a safe environment to express fears and anxieties in a non-judgemental relationship can lead to greater understanding of where they are on their own journey.
I began working at The Road Centre in 1998 as an administrator, learning the workings/structure of the company and developing it’s potential. In 2005 I began my training and as stated above, qualified in 2008. In 2009 one of the founding directors of The Road Centre retired and I was asked to become Co-Director with Kevin Daly. Having significant knowledge of the company I took on this task without hesitation.
