This experiential workshop will discuss the challenges of working with self-harm and suicide.

Ethical and professional issues will be explored. How therapeutic conditions can be maintained whilst encouraging explicit sharing of experiences of self-harm and suicide will be examined.

Learning objective:

1. Discuss professional and ethical issues with reference to working with self-harm and suicidal clients.
2. Consider how working with self-harm and suicidal clients may alter the therapeutic relationship and how therapeutic conditions are maintained.
3. Identify risk and assessment factors.
4. Explore the importance of facilitating explicit sharing in counselling practice.
